At the dawning of the 21st century, world castastrophes are requiring more and more help for millions of people on this planet we call home. The tsunami in South Asia has caused an unprecedented amount of pain and suffering. The unimaginable suffering, rape, murder and displaced millions of other people fo the Daufur of Sudan, AIDS which is ravishing countless millions in Africa, Asia and Haiti, just to name some, make it clear that people are very much in need of our help. These are organizations that need support and volunteers locally, nationwide and globally. Some of these sites refer you to other sites that are in need of help as well. This list is by no means exhaustive. Organizations listed here can refer you to others that need your help. You can also search the web for other organizations as well. Alameda County Community Food Bank-- (America's Second Harvest of Food Banks, Food Banks of the Bay Area) All About Charity---In depth information about and links to numerous charities. America's Second Harvest-- America's Second Harvest is the nation's largest domestic hunger relief organization. Its network of over 200 food banks and food-rescue programs provides emergency food assistance to over 23 million hungry Americans each year, eight million of whom are children. American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter--The mission of the Bay Area American Red Cross website is to provide messaging to our community to help prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies; to enhance self-reliance and concern for others; and to improve the quality of human life. Battered Womens Alternatives--Serves battered women and their families. Our mission is to eliminate domestic violence and help families flourish. Bay Area Homeless Alliance --The Bay Area Homeless Alliance is the largest collaboration of homeless service providers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bay Area Black United Fund-- BABUF provides support to the many service providers who feed the hungry, house the homeless, provide health services, youth education and development, social services, and support the arts. Bay Area Hunger Organization (Food Banks of the Bay Area)--Our seven food banks in the Bay Area serve these families by distributing more than 65 million pounds of food to local families through our networks of more than 1750 charities and congregations. Our goal is to end hunger in our communities. Breast Cancer Site--The Breast Cancer Site was founded to help offer free mammograms to underprivileged women nationwide -- women for whom early detection would not otherwise be possible. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40 - 55. Early detection is the key to survival, yet 13 million women in the U.S. over 40 have never had a mammogram. CARE--CARE is an international consortium of 12 member countries, dedicated to the worldwide reduction of poverty. It is a Network of relief and development organizations, with projects in more than 60 countries. Charity USA--a listing of charitable organizations, some of which are listed on this page. Catholic Charities--The organization strives to empower the working poor to move beyond basic survival living to a state of meaningful, quality living through economic, family and emotional stability. Catholic Charities assists individuals and families to establish in their lives the anchors required to break the cycle of poverty. Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Care--Free alternative complementary care for women with cancer. The Child Health Site--The Child Health Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need -- saving children's lives and improving the quality of their health. City Cares (has national affiliate centers)--CityCares expands and supports an innovative alliance of volunteer organizations working to build community through service and civic engagement. Directory of National Housing and Homelessness Organizations--The organizations listed in this directory work on homeless and housing issues on the national level. State and local homeless and housing advocacy coalitions are listed in the Directory of Homeless & Housing Advocacy Coalitions. Doctors Without Borders--Doctors Without Borders or MÈdecins Sans FrontiËres--MSF) delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters, and to others who lack health care due to social or geographical isolation. Hands on San Francisco-- (a City Cares affiliate)--Hands On offers group service projects that address critical issues in our community, including environmental, AIDS, youth and elderly, disabled, homelessness, and more. Network for Good--Network for Good enables you to search more than 850,000 charities to make a donation. Hunger Site (National and global)--The Hunger Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific humanitarian need - the eradication of world hunger. On average over 220,000 individuals from around the world visit the site each day to click the "give free food" button and help feed the hungry. Founded in June 1999, The Hunger Site was the first online activism site on the Web. Make-A-Wish Foundation--A non-profit organization who grants wishes to children diagnosed with life threatening illness. In granting a wish, we offer the family smiles, happiness and hope. Proceeds from fundraising are used to fulfill children's dreams in the Bay Area. Mercy Corps--The Mercy Corps is a non-for-profit organization that exists to alleviate suffering, poverty, and oppression by helping people build secure, productive, and just communities. National Alliance to End Homelessness--The National Alliance to End Homelessness is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to mobilize the nonprofit, public and private sectors of society in an alliance to end homelessness. Net Aid--The organization's mission is to build an active network of people and organizations in developed countries committed to ending extreme poverty around the world. San Francisco Bay Area Voluneer Information San Francisco Suicide Prevention--Ý San Francisco Suicide Prevention (SFSP) is the oldest volunteer crisis line in the United States. It was founded in 1963 with the initial focus of providing telephone intervention to people experiencing suicidal crisis. Save the Children--Save the Children works in 19 states across the United States as well as in 47 other countries in the developing world to help children and families improve their health, education and economic opportunities. UCPNet--Understanding Disabilities, Creating Opportunities. United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)--The United Nations Children's Fund -UNICEF -works for children's rights, their survival, development and protection. United Way of America--United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement in making measurable impact in every community across America. Volunteers of America Bay Area --A diverse, creative ministry of service founded on spirtual values with unique programs designed to assist, treat and help empower people to transform the quality of their lives and expand their opportunities. Women's Cancer Resource Center--WCRC's mission is to to empower women with cancer to be active and informed consumers and survivors; to provide community for women with cancer and their supporters; to educate the general community about cancer; and to be actively involved in the struggle for a life-affirming, cancer-free society. World Vision YWCA Rape Crisis Center-- Located in Palo Alto is to empower survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones heal and regain control of their lives, to create awareness within the community about the issue of sexual assault, and to provide education. Gifts In Kind--Gifts In Kind International donates products and services to over 50,000 charities and schools worldwide thanks to thousands of generous companies. We are the leading nonprofit in the field of product contributions with the most extensive network of recipient organizations worldwide. Working Assets--Gives approximately 5 million dollars to at least 100 organizations at the end of each year. Members vote on organizations they want to contribute to. (They can also nominate organizations.) Wish List --Wish List for Teachers and Nonprofit Organizations. Eziba-- Eliba believes that the handcrafted work of skilled artisans - many laboring on behalf of worthy causes as well as for their own reward - can perfectly complement any life or style. Continuing its model of corporate social responsibility, a portion of its founders' stock has been pledged to the Eziba Foundation to improve artisans' lives in developing countries. Gear That Gives--Shop that benefits organizations in the Hunger Site. Greater Good.com-- GreaterGood.com is dedicated to making it free and easy to support good causes through everyday Internet use. Visitors do what they already do online -- shop, click, search, sign up for an ISP service, make travel arrangements, apply for a credit card and more -- with each action automatically generating revenue for a cause they select at no extra cost to them. Save the Children Gift Shop--Showcases and sells products to raise funds for organization's global projects. Hurricane Katrina is perhaps the United State's more disasterous, most horrific natural disaster ever. Rita, which followed on the heels of Katrina, also caused suffering and loss. Here is a number of organizations that offering support, and are seeking finanacial assistance and volunteers for all those who suffered in the Gulf States in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Some of the organizations listed here are cited above. When you contact organizations, especially to give funds, specify that you are doing so for "hurricane disaster relief" (for instance you're asked to do so by the Salvation Army). Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund--The two former presidents team up again, this time to raise funds for Katrina hurricane relief. Habitat for Humanity-- Former President Carter and Habitat for Humanity are collecting funds to start builting homes for hurricane victims in October 2005. Safe Haven Helping Hands---A grassroots campaign to hook-up with those who can give with those who are in need (food, clothing, housing, jobs, medical personnel, pet care, transportation). The Meeting Place is for looking for a person, or to leave a message for a loved one. The five hour concert featured a virtual Who's Who of music--Harry Belafonte, Abbey Lincoln, Shirley Caesar, Bill Cosby, Renee Fleming,Danny Glover, Elvis Costello, Paquito D'Rivera, Robert De Niro, Irvin Mayfield, Bette Midler, Toni Morrison, Aaron Neville, Arturo O'Farrill, Dianne Reeves, Marcus Roberts, Paul Simon, Meryl Streep, James Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Robin Williams, Cassandra Wilson, and more.
